Practical usage of models is the main reason most people do model-driven development. Techniques to describe relationships and transitions between different model abstractions and tools that implement these are the aim of model transformation community. Of course, the generation of code from models has been done for ages. Hopefully, the ongoing standardisation processes within OMG and tools implementing the standards contribute in improving our everyday model-driven development processes. Model to Model Transformation and QVT Model to model transformation is the
capability of describing relationships and mappings between model
concepts (in effect metamodel elements) and thereafter executing the
transformation on model instances. Model to Text TransformationModel to text transformations is the capability of generating text from models, such as provided by most case tools and a lot of scripting engines and code generators today. Currently, there is an ongoing process within OMG targeting model to text transformation: The MOF Model to Text Transformation RFP. The Second Revised submissions were due November 14th 2005. There are currently two different submissions:
An agreement was reached about having another submission with the goal of submitting a joint proposal. The dealine will be Aptil 3rd 2006. The MOFScript plugin prototype implements the concepts in the MOFScript submission of Softeam, SINTEF etc. |
